Is Estonia e-Residency Worth It in 2026?

Estonia's e-Residency program has processed over 100,000 applications since 2014. But is it worth it in 2026?

What e-Residency IS: A digital identity card that lets you form and manage an Estonian company remotely. It's NOT a visa, residency permit, or travel document.

What it costs: e-Residency card: €120-160. Company formation: €265. Annual accounting: €1,200-3,000. State fees: €25/year.

The 0% tax myth: Estonia charges 0% on retained profits — tax is only due when you distribute dividends (20%). This is genuinely powerful for reinvesting businesses. But if you're paying yourself a salary or dividends, you're paying tax.

Banking reality: Traditional Estonian banks (Swedbank, SEB, LHV) often reject e-Residents without Estonian ties. Wise Business and Payoneer are the realistic banking options.

Who it works for: EU-focused digital businesses, SaaS companies reinvesting profits, freelancers wanting EU invoicing, location-independent founders.

Who it doesn't work for: Businesses needing a physical EU presence, companies requiring traditional banking, founders expecting 0% tax on all income.

Verdict: Worth it if you're a digital business targeting EU markets and comfortable with EMI banking. Not worth it if you need traditional banking or physical EU operations.
